Chili for the Hannam-challenged

posted 11/10/06

Chili!  In Korea!  Without ever having to go to Hannam! I was absolutely delighted when my friend Clair invited me over for this excellent chili that she had thrown together with stuff from E-Mart.  Here are the ingredients, but you'll have to wade through my lavish, learned use of high end cooking terminology that would put Martha Stewart to shame if she hadn't already put herself there.

  • Some of the too-light-to-be-beef and too-dark-to-be-pork meat the sits in between the pork and beef at E-Mart (and costs a heck of a lot less than the beef)
  • One of those shrink-wrapped packages of dry veggies that are intended for Korean soups or jjiggae
  • The package of gochujang (red pepper sauce) that comes with the package of dry veggies (1/4 to 1/2 the packet makes it spicy spicy!)
  • Corn (Yes, corn.  Call it fusion.)
  • That sterling embodiment of culinary hope, that bright beacon in the dark 3,000 won per tomato Lotte Super night, that bang-up example of what canning has contributed to our world: Hunt's stewed tomatoes
  • Some kidney beans
