In a country where every form of patriotism has been shunned for the past 60 years, it's exciting to see that the German flags displayed for the Euro2008 games are still up on houses, cars and even bicycles.

While I was rightly concerned for Germany going into Thursday's quarterfinal against Portugal, Germany finally played its game, and the celebration was infectiously exciting in a country that has had to bury national pride for over 60 years.

Germany won against Austria, ensuring the team a quarter-final berth, but not without a few extra-football events to keep fans entertained. I knew this match was going to be something of an emotional one, but couldn't understand the antagonism.
