To the boys at Taesung

12/29/06 6:06 A GMT+01
It's been so easy for me to think of all the reasons I have to be happy about leaving Korea and teaching lately, but then my students remind exactly why I do it...and exactly how much I'm going to miss them.

[Photo Album] Christmas in Korea

12/28/06 3:59 P GMT+01
Last Christmas, I gave you my heart, but the very next day, you gave it away. This year, to save me from tears, I'll give it to someone special. --Wham!

I think I'm turning Japanese, I think I'm turning Japanese, I really think so

Three years ago if you would have offered me squid jerky I might have gagged, but today, it's one of my favorite snacks. So to humor those of you back home, here are the decidedly eastern items on a recently created list of "frequently eaten" foods.

[Photo Album] Starbongs

11/24/06 3:27 A GMT+01
The popularity of Starbucks in Korea has certainly left its mark in my home city of Yongin, inspiring the knock-off Starbongs. Despite the seemingly suggestive name, this place isn’t a Korean head shop.

I'll be with Buddha for Christmas

11/19/06 10:23 A GMT+01
An Asian Christmas survey for those of us who have to spend the holidays away from family...

The streets are 'safe'

11/13/06 3:45 A GMT+01
No, there's no violent crime in Korea, but if you're a western woman you're fair game for a myriad of demeaning physical violations like I was this weekend. Don't be fooled about 'Asian family values;' Korea has an underbelly black as night.

Chili for the Hannam-challenged

11/10/06 3:03 A GMT+01
Using the too-light-to-be-beef and too-dark-to-be-pork meat the sits in between the pork and beef at E-Mart (among other ingredients) my resourceful buddy Clair made this fantastic, cheap chili without ever having to visit Hannam.

South Korea as Kim's ATM: The Monitor's View

11/01/06 12:29 A GMT+01
Though I've written about the South's view of the situation with the North, this opinion article from the Christian Science Monitor more closely reflects my personal opinions of the many ways in which the North will exploit the goodwill of others.

South Korea's Engagement Dilemma

10/18/06 4:21 A GMT+01
In the wake of North Korea's recent nuclear test, South Korean policymakers face tough decisions on how to appease the UN by cutting back on current economic assistance without losing precious clout with the North, not to mention investment dollars.

Secondhand: hopefully not my new MO

10/17/06 2:22 P GMT+01
Finding my first Korean thrift store today was a real treat, mostly because people in this country seem to be completely neglectful when it comes to recycling certain used things.

Trash Lady

10/17/06 2:55 A GMT+01
There's a sense of desperation that overtakes you in a country where most things outside of pickled beets and cab rides are expensive and where comfort foods like guacamole are nearly impossible to find.

"A smaller blast than expected"

10/11/06 2:46 P GMT+01
No worries. North Korea's nuclear test only yielded a blast the size of the bomb used on Hiroshima. Seriously! Maybe even smaller!

In the time it would've taken me to drive from Oklahoma City to Guymon

10/10/06 2:36 A GMT+01
I could now drive from my apartment to the site where North Korea ostensibly tested a nuclear weapon yesterday.

[Photo Album] North Korea before Asia's own July 4th fireworks

07/10/06 4:49 A GMT+01
We were handed ID badges to wear at all times and warned of the consequences of destroying them: If your badge is bent, you will be fined. If your badge is wet, you will be fined. If you destroy your badge in any other way, you will be fined.

North Korea: Three Weeks to Launch

06/12/06 9:31 A GMT+01
My status as an American prohibits me from visiting Pyongyang, running into Kim Jong-Il and single-handedly solving the North Korean nuclear weapons issue, but at least I'll get in some good hiking when I head to Geumgang Mountains in North Korea.

[Photo Album] Korean Sumo: Ssireum

05/23/06 2:59 A GMT+01
They call it ssireum, but it might as well be called Korean Sumo. Whatever the name, our students conned Zac into wrestling another teacher during our school's recent Sports Day celebration.

[Photo Album] Trekking in Gangwon Province, South Korea

05/23/06 2:27 A GMT+01
Spring in Korea is gorgeous: the weather, the sights and the smells.

[Photo Album] Nineteen bucks

04/26/06 4:17 P GMT+01
In Korea, nineteen bucks will buy you a trip to the doctor/pharmacy or 40 small trash bags. Take your pick.

Korean Sushi: Not for Pansies

02/21/06 2:33 P GMT+01
On a food experimentation scale of one to ten, one being "I'll play it safe and stick to McDonald's" and ten being "Bring on the monkey brains and chicken urine," I'm a solid seven. However, Korean sushi is not for pansies.
